Dry needling

Dry needling is an advanced technique in physical therapy that aims to treat muscle tension and pain. In contrast to acupuncture, which targets energy meridians, dry needling focuses on the targeted relaxation of trigger points or tight muscle knots.

Goal and benefit

The main goal of dry needling is to relieve muscle tension and pain. Muscle contractions can be released by specifically inserting thin needles into the trigger points. This leads to improved blood circulation, the release of pain-relieving substances and relaxation of the affected muscles. As a result, patients experience increased mobility and pain relief.

Indications

Dry needling is commonly used for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions including:

  • Back and neck pain

  • Shoulder pain, including frozen shoulder

  • Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Sciatica symptoms

  • Muscle stiffness and tension

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Postoperative tension

Your physical therapist will determine the appropriate indication for dry needling through a comprehensive examination and diagnosis and create an individualized treatment plan to address your specific needs.

Treatment process

During the dry needling treatment, the trained therapist places thin needles precisely into the trigger points in the affected muscle. The needles are inserted precisely and can cause a short-term twitch or spasm in the muscle, followed by a noticeable relaxation. The needles are then carefully removed. The entire procedure is carried out under strict hygienic conditions and in compliance with all safety standards.
